The monthly magazine for literature and culture,
Das Innere Reich, was published by Paul Alverdes and
Karl Benno von Mechow. With a circulation between 5,000 and 6,000 issues it reached a wide readership between 1934 and 1944. It was not conceived to be a National Socialists' instrument of propaganda and therefore covered a broad spectrum of literary forms of expression. Among the numerous contributions worth mentioning are works by: Richard Billinger, Rudolf G. Bindung, Johannes Brobowski, Georg Britting, Hans Grimm, Gerd Gaiser, Agnes Miegel, Rudolf Alexander Schröder, Ina Seidel, Franz Tumler, Josef Weinheber, Ernst Wiechert, and Heinrich Zillich
