Some of them have a direct natural truth whilst the incredibility of others is presented with a self-assuredness, which denies all objections. It is a joy to read the fabulous stories, taken from antiquity, about the characteristics and behaviour of the animals. The 64 illustrations - three of them duplicates - are reproduced in many later books on animals, but never again with the same intensity as here in the original from Herr.
