«The so called Camerarius-Florilegium displays definite progress in comparison to the Öllinger-Codex. The drawings are ordered more systematically and reflect a changed concept of both the form of depiction and nature. Phantastic elements, decorative frills and imaginary backgrounds are all dispensed with and the representation of animals is completely absent. The drawings present exact representations of plants in nature or in the garden, some of them contain glazed clay or ceramic pots, wooden boxes and trellises or even suggestions of the surroundings. Luxuriant blooming flowers dominate but flowering herbs are also depicted. The illustrations are stylistically so uniform that at the most two artists can have been involved.
The attribution of the Florilegium to Joachim Camerarius is problematic. Surprisingly the book contains no reference to the owner.»
